Ripple I explores hyperbolic geometry—those saddle-shaped surfaces that curve in opposite directions simultaneously. I've always been fascinated by how these forms appear in nature: coral reefs, kale leaves, sea slugs—anywhere growth needs maximum surface area in minimal space.

The pattern here radiates from a central point, each wave flowing into the next with mathematical precision. I designed it parametrically in Grasshopper, defining the curvature relationships and letting the algorithm generate the surface. What looks organic is actually rigorously mathematical—every ridge and valley follows the same hyperbolic equation.

Creating this required CNC machining rather than laser etching. The depth and three-dimensionality of hyperbolic forms demand actual carving—removing material in layers to build up that sculptural quality. The aspen hardwood machines cleanly, holding crisp edges even in the deepest recesses. Antique gel stain settled into those carved valleys, creating natural shadows that emphasize the dimensional flow.

Hyperbolic geometry was once considered purely theoretical—a mathematical curiosity with no real-world application. Then mathematicians discovered it describes the shape of space itself in our universe. That's the thing about abstract math: it's often describing reality before we recognize it.

The square format creates interesting tension with the radiating circular pattern—the geometry wants to expand infinitely, but the edges force it to terminate. That constraint actually makes the piece more dynamic, like capturing a moment mid-ripple.

Commission similar work: While this specific piece is sold, I can create custom hyperbolic wood carvings in different sizes and configurations. Each piece is unique, with variations in the parametric design creating distinct flow patterns. Contact me to discuss a commission.
